RESULTS OF PRELIMINARY ROUND OF MATHEMATICS PROJECT COMPETITION (CATEGORY 1)

With regards to the matter above, herewith is the list of results of preliminary round of mathematics project competition conducted on 23rd and 25th May 2009.

The champion school will be presenting their project as a performance for the Final Round of Mathematics Project Competition of the 17th eXPLOMATHS 2009. The final round will be held tentatively on the 29th July 2009 at Sekolah Menengah Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar, Kuala Belait.

RESULTS OF PRELIMINARY ROUND OF MATHEMATICS PROJECT COMPETITION (CATEGORY 2)

With regards to the matter above, herewith is the list of results of preliminary round of mathematics project competition conducted on 23rd, 25th and 26th May 2009.

The top two schools are qualified for the Final Round of Mathematics Project Competition of the 17th eXPLOMATHS 2009. The finalists are Chung Hwa Middle School, B.S.B and St. Andrew’s School. The final round will be held tentatively on the 29th July 2009 at Sekolah Menengah Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar, Kuala Belait.

MATHEMATICS PROJECT COMPETITION

OBJECTIVES

To provide a platform whereby students are given the opportunity to design and demonstrate their mathematical talents and prowess to a panel of judges as well as visitors.

SCOPE OF THE COMPETITION

The scope of the competition will focus on Mathematics Projects under the specified title in the Mathematics SPN21 curriculum namely (i) Functional Mathematics in PMV, and (ii) Mathematics syllabus for year 7 and year 8. The rationale for having such limited scope is to focus on the development of Mathematics SPN21 curriculum.

The competition will be project-based where students’ creativity and originality of ideas, skills in presentation and expression of ideas and knowledge, and the skills of using IT are elements that must be projected in the competition.

TARGET GROUPS

The target groups will be students at the PMV, year 7 and year 8 levels.

CATEGORIES

The competition will be organized into two categories:

Category 1: PMV students
Category 2: Year 7 / Year 8

The rationale for incorporating the three categories is to give opportunities for all three groups of students to benefits from the 17th eXPLOMATHS.

NATURE OF COMPETITION

The projects to be presented will be based on the topics given and relevant to the SPN 21 Mathematics curriculum. The evaluation of the project will emphasize on the students’:

i. Knowledge and skills in the use of IT and other Mathematical models to represent their ideas and creativity.
ii. Presentation of ideas to express their understanding of the topics or problem areas. This includes presentation and communication skills, and
iii. Creativity and originality of the projects.

OUTCOMES AND BENEFITS

Besides benefiting the participating students, the 17th eXPLOMATHS will also be packaged to enable it to be disseminated to others in the form of resource pack that can be used as Mathematics learning and teaching resources.

RULES AND REGULATIONS OF MATHEMATICS PROJECT COMPETITION

♣ Participation of students in the project competition.

1. The competition is open to all the Government and Non-Government Secondary Schools (year 7, year 8, PMV1 and PMV2 students only) and each team members shall agree to abide by these rules.

2. Every school shall be represented by 2 teams (1 team for each category) and each team member must have a team captain.

3. The committee of the 17th eXPLOMATHS will notify each competing team of the dates, times and venues for the competition.

4. For category 2 teams, the topic title for the project is required to be send to the committee in the entry form given. In case of changes in the topic title or team members, it should be done latest 2 weeks before the competition date. Any changes after that will not be entertained.

♣ Stages of the Mathematics Project Competition.

5. The Mathematics Project Competition for category 1 will be conducted in one stage:
i. Preliminary Stage

6. The Mathematics Project Competition for category 2 will be conducted in two stages:
i. Preliminary Stage
ii. Grand Final Stage

:: Preliminary Stage ::

7. The Preliminary stage consists of 4 days (2 days for each category).

8. For each category, the teams will be group into 4 different groups.

9. The committee of the 17th eXPLOMATHS will do the grouping and notify each competing team of the dates, times and venues for the competition.

10. The preliminary stage will be divided into two rounds:
i. The Presentation Round
ii. The Q & A Round

11. The result for top 3 teams from category 1 will be announced on the closing ceremony whilst the result for top 2 teams from category 2 will be announced on the later date and these top 2 teams will proceed to the Grand Final Stage.

:: Grand Final Stage ::

12. The Grand Final stage will takes place during the closing ceremony day.

13. In this stage, the top 2 teams from category 2 will be presenting their project infront of the guests.

14. The project to be presented at the Grand Final Stage will be different from the topic presented during the Preliminary stage.

15. The Grand Final stage will be divided into two rounds:
i. The Presentation Round
ii. The Q & A Round

16. The team with the higher score will be declared as the Mathematics Project Competition 2009 winner, and the other Grand Finalists will be declared the Project Competition first runner-up.

♣ Rounds of the Mathematics Project Competition.

17. Both stages consists of two rounds:
i. Presentation round
ii. Q & A round

:: The Presentation Round ::

18. In this round, the team members are required to present the given (category 1 ) /chosed (category 2) topic of the project either via the use of IT or other Mathematical models.

19. During the presentation round, the team members are given 15 minutes to present their project to the judges. The team members are required to divide their time during the presentation.

20. In this round, no help should be given by the supervising teacher.

:: The Q&A Round ::

21. In the Q & A round, three questions will be addressed to each team. The team members are permitted to confer with one another to agree to their answers. Team members are given 1 minute to discuss the answer. After 1 minute, the team captain from each team is required to give the answer to the judges.

22. In this round, each correct answer will score five points. A partially correct answer may possibly score two points. Any incorrectly answered question scores no point. If any team fails to give their answer within the specified time given or after being requested by the judges, no marks will be awarded.

23. In this round, no help should be given by the supervising teacher.
